RR|A’s recently completed project, The Buzzards Bay Center in New Bedford, MA, has received two preservation awards. The George C. Perkins President’s Award from WHALE (the Waterfront Historic Area League of New Bedford) has been given for “contributions that have made a positive impact on the quality of life in Greater New Bedford.” The second award is the Massachusetts Preservation Award – Massachusetts Historical Commission’s highest honor.
The Buzzards Bay Center is a model of green renovation with a high performance envelope, including historically accurate windows; a vegetated roof; and 3.6 KW of solar photovoltaic. The building is located within the New Bedford Whaling National Historic Park, and the design met strict historic rehabilitation guidelines.
This education center contains offices, a meeting room, a library, a laboratory, and public exhibits.
