Deep Energy Retrofit > A deep energy retrofit is the renovation of an existing home that results in the profound reduction of energy consumption. RR|A teamed with Building Science Corporation, Price Sustainability, and Synergy Construction to improve the energy efficiency of a 1980's contemporary residence near Boston, and, in the process, transformed the appearance of the home. Work included removing the old siding, roofing, and roof overhangs; replacing windows with new triple-glazed units; adding four inches of rigid insulation to the exterior; and re-siding and re-roofing. A heat recovery ventilator provides precise amounts of fresh air to interior spaces. Incandescent bulbs were replaced with more efficient LED and fluorescent bulbs. RR|A's design reconfigured the screened porch; eliminated unused and deteriorated decks; adjusted the number, spacing and size of windows; added sunshades; changed siding types; and improved the front entry, transforming the exterior appearance of the house. RR|A is working with the owners to monitor actual energy use.
