MAINE POLICY REVIEW - "SIZE MATTERS"

This article by Richard Renner appears in Maine Policy Review, Issue 17 Number 2, Fall/Winter 2008:

SIZE MATTERS: NOTES ON GREEN DESIGN PROCESS AND GOALS

“How many solar collectors will we have, and where will they go?”
“It will be green because we will have solar hot water.”
“I know that building is efficient because it has geo-thermal heat.”

I am an architect specializing in environmentally responsible, or green, design, and these are statements I often hear from clients or individuals interested in energy- and resource-efficient design. (Note that I avoid the over-used term “sustainable,” because so far, no, or at best, very little, current building construction is truly sustainable.) Since the construction and operation of buildings require a huge portion of our national and global energy budgets, the increasing interest in making buildings more efficient is encouraging. FIRST LEED® HOME PLATINUM REHAB IN THE U.S.

Portland, Maine—Richard Renner | Architects is pleased to announce that the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has awarded the loft at 6 South Street, Portland, Maine, with Platinum Certification in the LEED® for Homes Program. LEED-H, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Homes, is a national rating system that promotes the design and construction of high performance “green” homes. Platinum is the highest certification.

The two bedroom loft is located in a mixed-use urban neighborhood. It is part of a project that converted a derelict commercial building into a flexible, modern, and environmentally responsible live/work combination. The loft’s tightly organized plan accommodates multiple functions without compromising openness and long interior views. High levels of insulation and triple-glazed windows reduce energy use. Light tubes bring daylight into interior spaces. The residence also f…

FIRST PLATINUM RATED HOME IN NORTHEAST

Portland, Maine—Richard Renner Architects, in partnership with Wright-Ryan Construction, are pleased to announce that the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has awarded Platinum Certification in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) for Homes-Pilot Program to 10 Cranberry Ridge Road, Freeport, Maine. The house is the first in the Northeast to receive LEED-H platinum status and the third in the country. Platinum is the highest certification for the LEED-H rating system.

Created by the USGBC, LEED for Homes is a national rating system that promotes the design and construction of high performance “green” homes. Their definition states that; “A green home uses less energy, water, and natural resources; creates less waste; and is healthier and more comfortable for the occupants.” The LEED rating system allows buildings to gain points for excellence in attaining these environmental criteria.
