University of New England Marine Science and Education Center > The design of the new 27,000 SF Marine Science Research and Education Center began with a detailed programming and site selection process. Located at the mouth of the Saco River in Biddeford, Maine, the building houses research and teaching laboratories with continuously flowing seawater, exhibits, a marine mammal rehabilitation facility, classrooms, and faculty offices. The building was carefully sited to minimize disruption of existing trees and topography. Energy-saving elements include daylighting, sun shading, a high-performance building envelope, solar pre-heat of make-up ventilation air, and natural convective ventilation. A sustainable educational research facility, the Center set a precedent for green design on the campus of the University of New England.
